Important changes to Medicare rules for Mental Health Care Plans

July 27th, 2023

Recent Medicare changes now allow for GPs to prepare a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) for patients without an existing relationship.

That means that a SwiftDoc GP can now prepare an MHCP for you even if we haven't seen you before for a consultation, or if it has been a while since your last visit.

This change allows you to access the mental health care you need, more quickly and at a reduced cost.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)?

A MHCP is a tailormade plan prepared by your SwiftDoc GP to address your mental health concerns.

A MHCP gives you access to 10 Medicare-subsidised sessions with a psychologist. You'll be able to access six sessions initially, then after further review with your SwiftDoc GP, access up to four more.

Your SwiftDoc GP conducts an initial assessment of your mental health care needs, prepares a plan for you to take to your chosen psychologist, then follows up with you after six sessions to reassess your mental health care needs.

The initial consultation with a SwiftDoc GP is bulk-billed. Select "Mental Health Consultation with GP" when booking your appointment with us.

SwiftDoc also offers psychology services, where you can have your sessions from the comfort of your home with our 100% online service.

Ready to get started?

Simply book a "Mental Health Consultation with a GP". In your consultation, your GP will explain how the MHCP works, and how it may help you with your mental health concerns.
